Shopping through the American Airlines AAdvantage eShopping Portal is a great way to earn extra miles from everyday shopping. They frequently run promotions where you can earn bonus miles by meeting certain minimum spend thresholds.

During their 10 Million Mile Event, which runs now through September 16th you can earn 500 bonus miles on your first 4 purchases above $75. You have the opportunity to earn a maximum of 2,000 bonus miles in addition to the base miles you’ll earn from the purchases.

In order to qualify you must register before making a purchase via this link. Once at the site click “Sign up & register for the bonus.”

If you’re not already an AAdvantage eShopping Portal member simply fill in your AAdvantage number and some other personal information to sign-up for an account and simultaneously register for the promotion.

If you’re already an AAdvantage eShopping Portal member click on “Log in” link located directly below the “Sign up and register to shop the 10 Million Mile Event” title, enter your AAdvantage number and password then click “Log in.”

Once registered you should receive the following confirmation and you can proceed to shop through the portal.

Earnings Potential

For this example, let’s say I make a $75 purchase at 4 different retailers:

• Lands’ End – 300 miles
• Macy’s – 225 miles
• Bed Bath & Beyond – 150 miles
• Groupon – 225 miles
• Total base miles – 900
• Total bonus miles – 2,000
• Total miles – 2,900

I hypothetically earned 2,900 American AAdvantage miles. Using The Points Guys latest valuation of American AAdvantage Miles (1.4 cents per mile) that’s a total value of $40.60, which is a 13.5% return on $300 of spend. Not bad, but not great.

Your return will be higher if the retailer is offering more base miles per dollar spent and don’t forget to use your favorite points credit card for additional return.

Overall Verdict

First Class Giraffe Not Impressed

I wouldn’t go out of my way to participate in this offer, but if you have some online shopping planned this week there’s no downside to signing up. Every extra mile counts towards making your dream trip a reality.
